Kid Funnies

Just a few quotes to tickle your funny bone for the day...

Jason had all the kids upstairs in our bedroom wrapping my presents for Christmas. Hattie was holding the tape while Ben was doing some wrapping. As it came time to seal the package shut, he went over to Hattie and took the tape out of her hands. She immediately marched over to Jason to tattle on what crime had just been committed. In a loud, angry voice she said:
"Ben....tape....mad!"

*****

Cora: Mom, I like sharing a room with Lily better than with Ben. She doesn't
make me mad like he does.

*****

Lily: Mom!! I have to wrap my present for Ella!!
Mom: Yes...but we have to buy it first.

*****

For breakfast this morning, we had cinnamon rolls. Each child was given one on their plate. Ben took his fork and scraped off all the frosting, enjoying the sugary sweetness. Once he realized it was all gone and he still had his entire cinnamon roll still sitting on his plate, he turned to Cora and said:
Can I borrow some of your frosting?

...She said no. ;)

Tuesday Tidbits

I overheard Lily and Hattie playing together yesterday. As a side note, these two play super-duper well together. Lily has such an interest in Hattie and that little girl will follow her big sister just about anywhere. Anyway, back to the thought at hand...I overheard them playing together...

Lily: Hattie, come on! Let's go play Baby Factory!!

***

We are getting ready to leave for Thanksgiving up at Grammie and Papa's house. I can't wait to go and spend some much needed quite time up there. With the impending move coming soon, there's not much time left to enjoy the house and the all memories it holds. Seems I'm not the only one as the kids are feeling some of the same things.

***

Grammie came to visit this past week and Ben asked what time she was going to be here. I answered and asked him why? He answered I haven't seen her in so long, I can hardly remember what she looks like. Aaahhh, I'm thinking the boy misses his Grammie. And now I'm fairly certain she won't go so long without a visit again. ;)

***

Hattie has started talking up a storm! She has so many words in her vocabulary now. The other day I heard her say "mon, Daddy" (translation: c'mon daddy).

***

This dog may be the death of me. On yesterday's chew list: Hattie's pink blanket, Lily's headband, 2 socks, and a domino. Before you judge, Yes...I had the kids exercise her outside, yes...she had a doggie bone to chew on, and yes...she had had plenty of play time. If dogs could talk, my first question would be "why don't you choose the bone when it's right next to you?!?"

***

Off to enjoy some homemade m&m cookies. A rarity in this house so I'm gonna savor every bite. Not to mention that I am soon to be on a real health kick. Will tell why in another post.

Wordless Wednesday

Gonna put up a few pics to get myself back in the game.

I have such good intentions with this blog and then life happens. Life. With 5 children. Homeschooling. A baby. There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day.

Did I mention that whenever I sit down to put up a post, this phenomenon happens:
One of any of the 5 children immediately come into the office to ask me a question, or ten. But not in succession. The sweet child will ask me a question, disrupt my train of thought, wait for an answer, stand there for about two minutes (obviously waiting for me to get back to what I was doing (what thought was that again that I was going to write about?), notice I am back in my groove, ask me a second question, disrupt my train of thought, wait for an answer, stand there for about 2 minutes (obviously waiting for me to get back to what I was doing (what was that funny sentence I had thought up?), notice I am back in my groove, ask me a third question, disrupt my train of thought, wait for an answer, stand there for about 2 minutes (obviously waiting for me to get back to what I was doing (what was that story I wanted to make sure I shared?), notice I am back in my groove....and on and on it goes. Until I look down at my screen, realize I have been trying to post for about 20 minutes and all I have to show for it is 3 meager sentences. That's when I throw my hands up in the air, resign myself to another day passing with no blog post, and let out a deep sigh.

How's that for a Wordless Wednesday? By the way, just in case you were wondering, here's the tally: Cora was at my side for the entire writing of this post, 5 questions were asked. Lily was close behind with 2 interruptions regarding a pencil that was the perfect color, but was in dire need of being sharpened...right. now.

On to a pic or two...

Hattie loves to play babies...

This is her "go to" smile these days...

Domino days to keep us entertained when it's so cold outside...

Hattie's Favorite Trick

The girl couldn't be prouder of being able to perfect this trick.

It makes me laugh.

A Pony...And Not The Kind You Are Thinking

One of my baby's first ponys. This girl already has a lot of hair and it's coming in thick. Can't wait to see what it looks like when she gets bigger.

She loves to have "pretties" in her hair and doesn't miss a chance to have her hair done when she sees her big sisters getting theirs fixed.

Btw...notice those long eye lashes?!? I can thank her Daddy for those. :)

Love, From Hattie

Ella had a little bit of fun with the foam stickers. :)

It makes me smile...couldn't be a cuter bum in the world.

Snapshot #4

Outside my window: Warm, summer-like weather. Today is supposed to be 75 degrees and the weekend will reach 80! So glad that summer is making a comeback. The season was entirely too short for my liking. Going to be soaking up these next few days outside. We may take a "snow day"...since as a homeschooler, a snow-storm that stops public schoolers doesn't do a thing for us. Why not use those days the other kids get off by actually enjoying the weather instead of being stuck inside!

I am thinking: That the sounds of kids' laughter and happy voices playing outside is music to my ears.

I am thankful for: Lily's 6th birthday this past Tuesday. I can't believe that she is growing up so fast. She had a lovely day. We started it off with swimming at the YMCA with our friends and then a fab supper with the menu hand-picked by the birthday girl herself. As always, she picked homemade split pea and ham soup, homemade rosemary buns, and Japanese cheesecake with berries and whip cream for dessert.

Dinner plans: Just bought some Cajun seasoning...was planning on Cajun chicken alfredo, but now that I see the weather shaping up so nicely, I may be persuaded to do some brats on the grill with a side of veggies and watermelon.   I'm guessing there's not too many days left to stay in denial that summer is over and pretend that winter isn't coming.

Future plans I'm looking forward to: Jason and I are going to a marriage enrichment seminar at church next month. I'm so excited...I haven't gone to anything like that since...hmmmm...well....before children. So I guess that makes 10 years.

Something you didn't know: I told the kids they couldn't eat the last carmel roll because we were going to save it for Daddy. Unbeknownst to them, I brewed myself a delicious cup of tea and enjoyed the whole thing myself while they were sleeping. Sorry honey.

In the kitchen: In the spirit of being honest...it looks like a bomb hit it. I didn't feel that great yesterday and spent some extra time just sitting and resting on the couch. Whew...you let even one meal slide and you have a complete disaster in the kitchen that takes days to get ahold of. My poor dishwasher will be going no-stop today.

Reading: We are off to the library today. New books!! One of my favorite days because it will keep the kids quiet and entertained for hours. The big kids and I are reading The One and Only Ivan right now. We picked it up at the library for .25 cents a few weeks back on the "for sale" shelf. Seems cute so far.

Watching: Downton Abbey. Thank goodness for amazon prime. We don't have to sit through commercials and we can zip through a season in record time. The drama takes place in the early 1900's. I love this! Many people don't know that I'm sort of an "old soul" at heart.

Snacking on: Hmmm...I would love to say peanut m&m's or carmel rolls or chips ahoy cookies or chocolate cupcakes or 7 layer bars or brownies or chocolate zucchini cake... or anything with sugar in it really. Yes, I realize this is a problem...which is why I am trying to turn a new leaf. Today's snack is flax crackers and hummus.

Rest-of-the-day-plans: Enjoy the weather, which means it's time for me to get off the computer and get myself outside. And yes, I understand this may impede my ability to get my kitchen back in working order by day's end. Hattie has also been working on molars and her demeanor is a little less then stellar at the moment. Hoping the fresh air cheers my baby up a bit. Sometimes a distraction is needed.

Growing Up So Fast...

It's hard to resist a little sweet face asking "Mama...can we put on make-up?"

Some days it just seems like I have 6 kids...

I can't figure out why?

Molars

Molars.

A love/hate relationship.

They are great when you really need to crunch something...

But oh, so aweful when you are dealing with them breaking through tender gums...

Poor baby hasn't slept good in days. (Niether has this mama)

Diaper Wipes, Part 2

Is there a Diaper Wipes Part 1?

Well, not exactly. But...

There was the hilarious episode of when Lily had a hay-day with the tissues.  And so when Hattie got her little fingers on the box of wipes, I knew what to expect.

Sort of.

So I walked away... (rookie mistake)

And when I returned, she had cleaned out the whole bucket...

She was none-too-pleased to see me...knowing that all good things were coming to an end.

Jory

My sweet nephew was born this summer and I had the absolute priviledge of photographing him.

I've been so excited for this little bundle for months...well, if truth be told, it's been years. Years in the making! I couldn't be more excited to have him here.

I can't wait to watch him grow up...

I can't wait to see what kind of a boy he will be...

I can't wait to watch my sister blossom as a mom...

I can't wait to hear about his first giggle...

I can't wait to hear him say "Auntie"...

I can't wait to see how God will use him...

Throwback Thursday

Ran across these the other day...

I forget how little she used to be...

Time goes too quickly!

Say It Ain't So!

I know that life gets busy...but it is crazy when I think to myself "I haven't blogged in awhile...I should really do that!" and I check HublerPlanet and realize that the last post was over 2 months ago!

Yikes!

Time to get back in the saddle again...

Time to slow down and get serious about this blog...

Time to sit down, enjoy the sunshine, and start typing...

Tuesday Tidbits

I'm completely missing being on vacation. It's back to the grindstone...back to normal life. We returned from vacation on Saturday and I was awoken at 3:45am Sunday morning by a feverish baby. We have spent the past 48 hours with a very owly Hattie. After two nights of incredibly restless sleep, I'm happy to report the fever seems to have broken.

If this blog post seems a bit "off"...chalk it up to sleep deprivation. This mama is tired.

I'm still working my way through vacation laundry. It's amazing how much needs to be washed when it's been accumulating for a week. I've only got 2 loads left to wash...but..*ahem*...about 5 to fold. Laundry has got to be my least favorite household chore.

Today's high is 67 degrees for July 1st. I am loving it! It has been hot and humid and this cooler weather is a wonderful break. Did I mention it's also supposed to be cloudy all day? My favorite weather is overcast and breezy. I don't worry about the kids (or me) getting sunburned, I don't get a headache from the sunshine, and the breeze feels like silk on your face. I may just spend most of my day outdoors. :)

We missed doggie obedience class last night because Jason missed the train. I'm feeling quite certain we are not going to graduate next week. Have I mentioned that dogs are a lot of work? Wish my parents would have told me that before I went out and got one of my own! Oh, wait...what's that you say? They did tell me? Over and over? What! Was I listening?!?

I made eggbake yesterday and saved half for today's breakfast and I made double lasagna casserole last night for supper...which means I don't have to cook a meal until supper tonight. Yipee! I love it when good plan comes together like that!

And the most noteworthy tidbit. And I'm gonna say this quiet so as not to jinx myself. I think the fleas are gone. We haven't had a bite in 2 weeks now. Keeping my fingers crossed those critters are gone.

Snapshot #3

Outside my window: Warm, humid, windy weather. My kind of summer. Love it when it's like this. The sun is behind a ton of clouds so no worries of sunblock vs. a sunburn dilemma, squinting, or sun headaches. Hmmm...is that how you spell "dilemma"...I'm sure not, but I'm too tired to spellcheck it.
I am thinking: that there's only 4 more days until vacation!! I am in dire need of one and I'm totally psyched about going to the Dells!

I am thankful for: breast pumps. I spent a majority of the night not sleeping well because of a plugged duct. The dam broke today and the milk came flowing finally. I was so worried I was going to end up with mastitis. I can't even tell you the relief (both emotionally and physically) it is to have this off my plate. Too much information, I know. I'm a nursing mom...what can I say. My life revolves around children, diapers, and breastfeeding.

Dinner plans: hmm, something with rotisserie chicken.  Not sure what I'll create. Oh, and it should include brussel sprouts, avocados, rice, and strawberries. Why, yes, I am cleaning out the fridge.

Future plans I'm looking forward to: Did I mention I'm going to the Dells??!!

Something you didn't know: I just got pulled away to kill a spider. All. By. Myself. Yes, I've gotten much braver when it comes to those 8 legged freaks. My mentality is this: I kill you before you can eat my children. It was a daddy long leg crawling on the dog. Eeeww. I almost picked it up with my bare hands...glad I got my wits about me before anything crazy happened.

In the kitchen: Leftover chinese food. I am on a trial period right now...slowly ramping up my gluten intake to see if my body can handle it. It's been a few weeks and I have worked my way up to some stirfry made with soy sauce. Who knew soy sauce was 50% wheat?? Gluten is everywhere, my friend. I can't even begin to tell you the nirvana I felt as I slowly and meticulously chewed my food. It tasted amazing. Without even knowing it, I had put my head in my hands and sat there quietly enjoying my meal. Ella interrupted and said "Mom, are you ok?" "Yeah...sorry, just enjoying my food!"

Reading: Do children's books count? We went to the library yesterday and left with four book bags filled to the brim. Ben got his own library card while there. Now he and Ella have their own so I can make them pay for their own late fees. Life lessons, right? Anyway, I'm sure I have no less than 80 or 90 library books that the kids are just waiting to have read to them.

Watching: I haven't watched tv in what feels like forever. Thanks to the fleas, I'm either vacuuming once the kids go to bed or am dead asleep in my bed. No time for tv here, folks.

Snacking on: My favorite...peanut butter with chocolate chips in it. I made a trip to Maple Grove the other day and made a stop at Trader Joe's. Love their peanut butter...and chocolate chips just send me over the moon. Oh, and a v-8..cause life can't all be about pb and chocolate.

Rest-of-the-day-plans: I've been a busy girl since 6:37 this morning and am determined to finish folding the last 3 loads of laundry sitting in my dining room. I'm hoping to unearth my desk when all is said and done. And hopefully find Hattie's missing swimsuit that I haven't been able to locate for a month now. And yes, I was that mom, and simply cried "uncle" and went and bought her a new one cause I was sick of looking for the dumb thing.

Hiatus

Yes...I haven't posted in a while.

Yes...I was doing so good and then I went MIA.

Yes...I plan on getting back on track.

Why you ask? Why the disappearance?

I'll explain later...

...but it has to do with a new little doggie family member and her 5,000 flea friends that came with her.

And as soon as I can post about it without wanting to pull my hair out and cry...I'll fill you in on all the details. :)

Hattie - 1 Year Old!

Just a quick couple of pics as I'm editing...

Snowstorm

Before you get too excited...this snowstorm was from last week.

But I became busy, never got around to, forgot to post about it.

The snow came down so fast and in huge clumps.

It didn't take long for it to start filling up the back porch. This amount was from early on in the storm. I should have taken a beginning and end picture so you could see just how much fell.

We ended up with around 16 inches. Completely crazy. A major snowstorm in April.

Then I remembered that last year, on April 18, we were in the hospital and Hattie was 1 day old. I was ready to head home, but we were stranded there because of the blizzard that was going on outside. My Dad couldn't get down to the Twin Cities to meet his new grandbaby because I94 was shut down.

This year, within just a few days, we had temps of 70 degrees. Luckily this snow never stood a chance on hanging around for too long.

What a crazy month April can be.

Photogenic

I had my camera out the other day...and Ella was my model.

I tell ya, it's hard for this girl to take a bad picture. Ever.

And just in case you were wondering, she's growing up a little too fast for this mama's liking.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

I'm sure there's musings that happen around here, but I only remembered to jot down two of them so that's all there is for today. :)

***
Cora: When I get to heaven, can I give Jesus a hug?
Mom: Absolutely!!
Cora: Do you think He would like that?
Mom: I'm positive He would love that.

***
Jason: Ben, where are you gonna live when you get bigger?
Ben: Hmmm...Right here. (pointing to the other side of the pond)
Mom: Good, nice and close. Then you can come over and mow my lawn.
Ben: No, then you can come over and mow my lawn!

Cousins

Aaliyah was up over spring break...and the kids all had a blast spending time with her.

A quick shot of the six of them...

And one of Aaliyah...

We sure love when she comes to visit.

Happy 1st Birthday, Hattie!!

Disclaimer: I tried so hard to get this all typed up and on the blog yesterday...but with a little girl to celebrate, it just didn't get done until this morning.

APRIL 17...

I. Cannot. Believe. It.

My baby is one today! Which techinically means she's not a baby anymore...but now a toddler.

Be still my heart.

It's hard to believe that in one short little year, she went from this:

to this:

To say I love this little girl is an understatement. She is such a blessing to me and I can't imagine my life without her in it. Hattie is growing up so fast and is really coming into her own. She can sign a few things (all done, more) and gets so excited when I sign "milk" to her. She has started to point to things that she wants and voices her opinion on most things. We (Mommy and Hattie) are usually the first two awake in the morning. Once we get downstairs to the living room, I turn the tv on to catch the first headlines of news for the day. The other day we came down as usual, but I didn't turn the tv on. Hattie started pointing at it and voicing "aaa...aaaa..aa". I looked at her and asked "Do you want mama to turn the tv on?!?" She started laughing and smiling. I wasn't sure if she seriously was communicating with me or if it was just a fluke. I continued to sit there. She again started pointing and voicing her opinion. I asked her again if she wanted mama to turn on the tv to which she started laughing and smiling. So I picked her up and walked right over to the tv. I pointed at it and asked again, she gave me all the confirmation I needed. I turned it on and she looked at me as if to tell me "good job, mama." ...the signs that she's not so little anymore. She's starting to really communicate with me and I can hardly believe it.

Hattie is still crawling...very fast. She can make her way around the house in very little time. Today Cora left the bathroom door open. That room holds so much mystery since Hattie is not allowed to hang out in there for obvious reasons. She looked at the open door, back at me, and then made a beeline for it. I could not believe how fast she could crawl. Needless to say, I didn't make it there before her! She also let me know just how unhappy she was that I was removing her from that amazing room.

Hattie is an affectionate, sweet, cuddly little girl. She loves her quiet time with Mama in her room and she loves morning snuggle time. Being outdoors is a whole new world for her after the cold, cold winter we have had. I can only imagine the tears that will come when it's time to come inside this coming spring. Hattie loves cream cheese, cottage cheese, and bananas. Those things are at the top of her list. Other decent items include: peas, yogurt, cheese, sweet potatoes, pears, apples, peaches, squash, rice, and avocados. We are still working on meats...she will eat them when they are strategically hidden inside something. :)

Walking isn't something she is interested in yet...although she pulls herself up to standing on almost anything...the ottoman, couch, a leg, whatever. She has just started to stand by herself, but is still pretty wobbly. She likes her walking toy, but it plays music, so she is usually too busy dancing to concentrate on figuring out how to walk with it. :)

Hattie doesn't believe in sleep. I'm not kidding. I've dubbed her the "sleepless wonder." The girl takes the tiniest of naps and to be honest, I'm not sure I can even consider them naps. To nap implies a decent amount of rest has been taken. And I'm quite certain 13 minutes doesn't qualify. A normal day consists of two naps...each between 20-30 minutes. And our record is 3 minutes. Sigh. The nights aren't too bad, if you consider waking 2-4 times a night normal. :) She's also decided that if Mama's gonna sleep with her (which I have to admit gives me the warm fuzzies), then it's gotta be right on top of me. Not the left side, not the right side...just plain ol' right on top.  I've gotten used to it, but I do look forward to a full night's sleep in my future. There's just something about waking up to a smiling baby looking at you contentedly, signaling all is right in their world because they got to start their day with you.

This child loves books. I mean really loves them. She is routinely found sitting in the living room by the bookshelves paging through them. Hattie also loves to be read to and can sit for quite a while for a child her age listening to a story.

Hattie has some super-duper ticklish spots. If you can manage to get her on back or the sides, she will squeal with delight. The tummy...maybe, under the neck...sure, armpits...you bet. But the sides and back...now that's the stuff pure laughter is made of.

This little girl brings me so many smiles in a day. I simply can not get enough of her. I am so grateful that God has given her to me to parent. I'm in awe that I have been chosen to be her mother. I didn't think that I would go through another pregnancy...and to hold her in my arms is truly a miracle.

3 Years ago yesterday...we got the travel call for Cora. She was ready to come home and we were crazy excited to go and pick her up. We made travel plans right away and were fortunate enough to get a flight out so soon.

3 Years ago today... we were leaving on a jet plane. It was a long day, but amazing to look back on it and see God's hand in it every step of the way. It gives me goosebumps reading it all again and reliving it.

Oh. My. Goodness. Even as I am typing, I can see the picture above and honestly, it takes my breath away. Those days were so special, so amazing, so exhausting, and so worth every second.

I can't believe how she has grown these past 3 years. She's come into her own, she's become so loving, and she makes me smile on a daily basis. Cora is such a smart girl, a real charmer, and full of life. She is strong-willed, knows what she wants, and is a real go-getter.

This girl brings so much joy not only to my life, but to this family. We are so incredibly blessed to be her parents and I am beyond grateful that God has brought us together. I can't wait to see God's plans for her life...she is full of so much potential.

Love you, Jihee!

Tuesday Tidbits

We had a busy weekend. Most of my family came to visit for the weekend. Zyra and Aaliyah came on Thursday evening, Mom and Dad arrived Friday afternoon, Jamie came Friday night, and Jill and Joren showed up on Saturday morning. To say sleeping space was at a premium is an understatement.

Since my niece, Aaliyah, is on spring break, she is spending the week with Grammie and Papa. And since we haven't taken a spring break yet, what better week than this one? So guess who also make the trip up north? I am sans two children this week. Ben and Ella were super excited to be able to go. It's amazing how having two less mouths to feed makes for such a quick meal and clean-up. It also makes for a lot less mess in the house. Hmmm...come to think of it, it also makes a lot less noise. ;)

It's tax day, and in true Hubler fashion, we Jason finished them up last night. Oh, the difference between a type A, planner personality and a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type personality. This time of year always gives me heart palpatations. In Jason's defense, we've never filed late.

Remember how excited I was to see the return of spring? Well, as irony would have it, it's a whopping 21 degrees outside today. Brrr. Seriously so tired of being trapped indoors.

Lily is loving the Fancy Nancy book we got from the library this week. I'm pretty sure she wants to  be fancy just like her.

The Frozen song "Let It Go" is still as popular as ever in our house. How many weeks can this go on?!? Cora asks to watch the Youtube video every. single. day. However, it has taken a new twist. We found this version. It's by Hyolyn and she is korean. Cora cannot get enough of it. There are times that she is singing the song to herself and I can't understand a word of it...I wonder if she is trying to sing it in korean. You can tell there is something comforting to her when she is listening to it.

We had a little bday party for Hattie with my family this weekend. Pics will be coming soon. Suffice it to say, she liked, adored, all-out loved her chocolate cupcake.

On tap for today...a day full of reading books to the girls, sipping hot tea, researching some one year old birthday shoot ideas, and just enjoying the day...it's my spring break too, afterall.

Spring Has Sprung

We had such nice weather this week. Our best day was in the low 70's. The kids played outside so much this week. And have slept sooo good because of it.

It's been such a long harsh winter that it feels like we have been cooped up for months. I am so excited for spring to be here. I want to feel the warm sun on my skin, breathe in the smell of dirt again, and spend lots of my waking hours outside playing with the kids.

I noticed our resident heron has returned. It's a sign that the ice is melting and the seasons are turning. I was trying to be so quiet when I snuck outside to take these pics, but as soon as I made the tiniest of noises, he spread his wings and took flight. He sure is pretty.

Update on Hattie

I took Hattie into the doctor on Monday. Her cough was so aweful that once my mother heard it over the phone, she told me I really should get it checked out. We buzzed over to the clinic where they checked her ears, throat, and lungs.

Although she is having a rough time, it seems to only be bacterial. I am so thankful. I am a mama who doesn't like giving antiobiotics unless absolutely necessary so I was thrilled that she  wasn't going to need any.

We went from this "look" on Sunday night ...

Soaking in the tub (pic taken one handed with my phone)
...to this look Monday afternoon. I was so grateful for some healing!

We are not out of the woods yet, as her cough and goopy nose are still very much with us, but each day gets just a little bit better.

As a mom, it is so hard to see your baby feeling absolutely miserable. I am so thankful that my little Hattie-Cakes has started to return.

Thanks to all of you who have checked in on us. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers. :)
